What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is the ancient art of sacred listening and companionship. Spiritual direction provides the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a trained spiritual director to share your life and experiences of the Holy. The term “spiritual direction” is a historical one, and is still used today, even though the practice of spiritual direction is much more like “holy listening.”
Kathleen Fischer says in Women at the Well that spiritual direction is “a conversation in which a person seeks to answer the question, ‘What is spiritual growth and how do I foster it in my life?’ The exchanges that comprise a spiritual direction relationship focus on awareness of and response to God in one’s life. But since God is the deepest dimension of all experience, the conversation will range over every area of existence. Spiritual direction concerns the movement of our entire lives in and toward God.”
You may come to spiritual direction to:
- deepen and strengthen your spiritual life
- integrate spirituality into your daily life
- share your joys and your sorrows
- help discern a new choice, direction, or pathway
The person seeking spiritual growth is called the directee. The person listening is called the spiritual director. Directees come from a variety of spiritual traditions or no spiritual tradition. Your life experiences have shaped your spiritual life and your images of the Holy – God as Father and Mother; God as the Holy and Sacred; God as Divine Mystery; God as Energy, Light or Life. Spiritual direction is an opportunity to tell your sacred story.
Spiritual direction is not counseling, psychotherapy, or any other type of therapy. Spiritual direction and counseling both use the ‘material’ from daily life, however the focus of spiritual direction is not to manage or seek resolution of issues. Both have value for personal growth and some people choose to work in spiritual direction and therapy at the same time.
The joy and privilege of the spiritual director is to accompany you as you deepen your relationship with the divine Mystery/God and yourself. This journey takes place in confidential one-on-one or group sessions with your director. If you would like to learn more about spiritual direction, please visit http://sdiworld.org/.
