Standard Tuning Backing: Find chords and voicings to make your standard tuned guitar sound more “Irish”. Or even “Celtic”.
Basics of Irish Trad Music: Make sure you understand the essentials of the music in order to play along comfortably on guitar.
Trad Theory: Seminar on understanding the role of the modes in Irish music and the chords that go with them. Bring all the questions you’ve ever had and they will be answered!
Advanced Dropped-D Chords: Learn more exciting chord voicings all over the fingerboard–some of which can do double-duty in Standard and some in DADGAD.
How to Accompany Weird Tunes: Some tunes either change modes, use accidentals, or are just plain squirrelly and hard to figure out; we’ll learn a system for making sense of them.
FLYNN & MATT’s joint classes
We will learn a Bothy Band chord progression for a tune that modulates between B minor and D major; and we will also explore the textural possibilities of song accompaniment with DADGAD, including fingerstyle techniques.
FLATPCIKING IRISH TRAD MUSIC
We will discuss pick gauge, right-hand technique, left-hand efficiency, tone, and ornamentation, and learn some exercises to develop the necessary skills to flatpick Irish trad (as well as other types of fiddle tunes) on the acoustic guitar.
Flynn is a long-time guitar sideman to Irish accordion legend John Whelan. He also tours around the country with American folk band Low Lily and teaches Irish trad guitar online with Peghead Nation.
Matthew performs with his wife Shannon Heaton in their world renowned and critically acclaimed flute-guitar duo. He's also performed with Boys of the Lough, Karan Casey, Aoife Clancy, and other trad music legends.
