Cellist Eugene Friesen
and Guitarist Ian Ethan Case
Eugene Friesen: Vermont Improv Intensive director, cellist EugeneFriesen, “…takes the cello beyond its traditional home of the classical ensemble, opening the door to a new era for the soulful instrument" (Digital Audio). Through his unbridled improvisations, original compositions, and international workshops, Eugene Friesen has blazed new trails for classically trained musicians intent on discovering their creative musical voices. The recipient of four Grammy Awards as a member of the Paul Winter Consort, Friesen is a professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and an artist-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.
Ian Ethan Case: Ian is one of the few musicians worldwide to tackle the double-neck guitar in earnest and on its own terms. He fluidly combines a staggering variety of self-invented playing techniques necessitated by his multi-layered compositions, which, taken together,? establish the instrument’s musical validity perhaps more so than the work of any other artist. While audiences consistently remark on the fascinating visual aspects of watching Ian play as his hands weave between fretboards and slap, tap, knock, strum, and pluck various other parts of the instrument to life, his unusual methods are clearly no more than functionally necessary by-products of the rich, deeply heartfelt, and powerfully uplifting music that he writes and plays.
